L.A. Clippers star Blake Griffin’s alley-oop slam over a Kia during the 2011 NBA Dunk Contest was one of the more memorable moments in the competition’s history.

Just about everything involved in it was noteworthy: from the choir singing in the background, to Kenny Smith serving as a hype man, to the actual automobile on the court, to Baron Davis sticking out from the sunroof to deliver the pass to Griffin jumping over the car and slamming it home to win the event.

As it turns out, though, that dunk wasn’t exactly what Griffin had in mind. According to Sports Illustrated's Lee Jenkins, Griffin intended on using a convertible with four Clippers teammates seated inside instead of a Kia with merely Davis supplying the assist.

“My plan for the dunk contest was to jump over a convertible with four teammates inside,” Griffin says. “The NBA kind of messed up that plan. They wanted me to jump over a Kia, because it’s a league sponsor, but the Optima is a huge car. I could only do the hood, so it didn’t look as cool.”

While Griffin is probably right in his sentiment that dunking over a hood wasn’t quite as cool as a convertible with really tall NBA players inside, it ultimately didn’t matter. Everything else surrounding the dunk took it over the top and because of that entire package, it will still go down as one of the more iconic moments in dunk contest history.
