Why Washington State Could Cover the Spread

The Washington State Cougars have a 5-4 record and are 2nd in the Pac-12 North division. They are coming off a 34-21 road win against Arizona State University last weekend. The Cougars went up 28-7 by halftime and cruised to a 13-point victory. The defense was the highlight of this game as the Cougars forced five total turnovers, including three fumbles and two interceptions. They are giving up 24.8 points per game to opponents this season and rank 4th in the nation in takeaways per game (2.2).

Offensively, quarterback Jayden de Laura leads the Cougars with 1,967 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. Runningback Max Borghi has 571 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the season. As a unit, the Cougars average 23.6 points and 364.9 yards per game. They are coming off a game where the offense totaled 400 yards and 34 points. In their last five conference games, the Cougars are 5-0 against the spread and have covered the spread in their previous six games.

Why Oregon Could Cover the Spread

The #3 Oregon Ducks are having a dominant season with an 8-1 record and 1st in the Pac-12 North division. They are currently riding a four-game win streak and are coming off a 26-16 victory against Washington. They held the Huskies to 166 total yards and just seven first downs in their last game. The Ducks have a very strong run game, ranking 8th in the nation in yards per rush (8.8). Running back Travis Dye leads the backfield with 820 rushing yards and eleven touchdowns. Quarterback Anthony Brown has rushed for 428 yards and seven touchdowns and has thrown for 1,895 yards and eleven touchdowns.

Defensively, opponents are scoring 24.4 points on 379.4 yards per game against the Ducks. At home, Oregon is giving up only 17.2 points. Linebacker Noah Sewell leads the defense with 79 total tackles while Verone McKinley III has four interceptions. Oregon will need to be ready for this Pac-12 matchup as Washington State has given them plenty of trouble over the last seven seasons. Luckily, they are home and should feed off the crowd in the night game.

Final Washington State-Oregon Prediction & Pick

Oregon will need to keep winning, especially by a wide margin, if they want to get into the college football playoff. With that said, Washington State has a good aerial attack and should be able to keep up the scoring with the Ducks. In the last five meetings, the Cougars are 5-0 against the spread and 10-1 against the spread in their last eleven meetings. I believe this game will be closer than the spread indicates. I would buy the hook just to play it safe and take the points with Washington State. Oregon plays well at home, but has had issues against the Cougars over the years so taking the Washington State spread is the way to go.

FINAL WASHINGTON STATE-OREGON PREDICTION & PICK: Washington State (+13.5)
