The Indianapolis Colts have a crucial decision to make regarding Carson Wentz's future with the franchise, and the latest update from GM Chris Ballard doesn't bode well for the 29-year-old's chances of remaining in Indy. According to Field Yates, Ballard said Tuesday that he still doesn't have an answer regarding Wentz's future, and it's something the team is actively working through.

Ballard didn't rule out the idea of bringing Wentz back, however, saying “ultimately, we'll do what's best for the Colts.” The Colts have until March 18 to make up their mind regarding Wentz's future with the team. After that date, they'll owe Wentz $27 million. If they manage to move on from him before that date, they would not be required to pay his $5 million signing bonus, nor his $7 million base salary.

The Colts have a ton of cap space to work with this offseason, so if push comes to shove, they could elect to trade Wentz and eat a portion of his salary for this season, though it's unclear what route they prefer to explore.

Last season, Wentz threw 27 touchdown passes and 7 interceptions, but the Colts were clearly a run-first team led by Jonathan Taylor. Despite what appear to be solid numbers from Wentz, he wasn't a game-changer for the Colts under center, and he ultimately came up short down the stretch when the team lost its last three games and crashed out of playoff contention.

The whole franchise is still reeling from that collapse, and it looks as if Wentz may be used as the scapegoat, with the Colts clearly not sold on him as their long-term quarterback.
