Colts working out free agent kickers with Adam Vinatieri still struggling
According to multiple sources, the Indianapolis Colts are planning to work out free-agent kickers today. As of Monday night, no decision had been made on the status of Adam Vinatieri, but the Colts want to get a look at what their options are in case they decide to make a change.

Vinatieri missed an extra point in the team’s loss against the Miami Dolphins, and it was costly. Instead of the team needing a field goal to tie the game on the last drive, the Colts were down by four points and had to go for the end zone. He missed a game-winning kick the week before in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After the game, Colts coach Frank Reich didn’t provide much up an update on where the team would go after the struggles.
“Really, no comment,” Reich said via ESPN. “We’ve been committed to [Vinatieri]. We’re going to always evaluate. Everybody gets measured. Everybody is held accountable, from top to bottom. That’s always the case. Nothing meant to read into that. That’s the reality of the business. There’s been no discussions about that between [general manager] Chris [Ballard] and I. That’s just the business.”
Vinatieri has missed six extra points and five field goals this season. A fair share of his extra-point misses has come at crucial times.
The Colts are sitting with a 5-4 record, and although winning the AFC South might be tough, they are still in the thick of the playoff race. The last thing a team with playoff aspirations wants to deal with is if a kicker is going to miss an extra point in a crucial time of the game.
We should have a better understanding of the team’s plans after the workouts are complete.
