The Indianapolis Colts tabbed six-time Pro Bowler Jeff Saturday as the team's interim head coach on Monday. And his time as the leader of the program is off to a wild start.

The Colts rolled out the red carpet for their former star center. They even held an introductory press conference for Saturday, with Irsay and Colts general manager Chris Ballard in tow.

The move to hire Saturday certainly raised eyebrows. However, Irsay believes in the new interim Colts head coach, and that he is qualified for the job.”Yes, he is fully experienced enough. Yes, he is fully capable,” Irsay told the media on Monday night.

However, he quickly backtracked, saying that Saturday isn't experienced at all. And that, in Irsay's mind, is a good thing. “Now, I'm glad he doesn't have NFL experience and that he hasn't learned the fear that's in this league,” he said.

Irsay then changed his tune again, saying the Colts were lucky given the experience Saturday brings to the role. “There was no other candidate. We were fortunate he was available. He has tons of experience,” he said.

Despite the back and forth, it does seem the Colts believe in Saturday. Especially if the position of interim coach was not offered to any other potential candidate, internal or otherwise.

For Saturday, he certainly hopes there is more to this than just finishing the 2022 season. He wants the opportunity to coach beyond this season, whether in Indianapolis or otherwise.

“I feel fully capable, excited about the opportunity. If it goes well, hopefully it will go extremely well … The job is win. This is an audition for this job and 31 other jobs,” he said.
