The Indianapolis Colts are ready to get to work and try to make it back to the playoffs. However, T.Y. Hilton is still a free agent and there is no strong belief that the franchise's lead wide receiver will be back this offseason. He may not be back at all, for any team.
Hilton wants to play next season but is also considering retirement. He is in conversation with other teams but is still talking with Colts general manager Chris Ballard, according to Stephen Holder of The Athletic.
He’s been quiet, but Hilton has had fruitful conversations with at least two other teams. There is legitimate interest outside the Colts organization. If Hilton wants to play, it appears the opportunity will be there regardless of what the Colts decide.
Hilton hasn’t ruled out retirement, either. He has told the Colts in recent weeks and months that his intention is to play in 2022. And he has remained in regular contact with Ballard in recent weeks. But the decision to play this season would likely be impacted by what kind of opportunities are available.
Hilton recorded 331 receiving yards, 23 catches and three touchdowns in 10 games last season. The four-time Pro Bowler has been a key player for the Colts for years and could still be somewhat productive with new quarterback Matt Ryan.
The Colts need wide receiver depth. Michael Pittman Jr. is the team's leading receiver and the depth behind him is not great. Adding a free agent, like Ryan's old friend Julio Jones, would be a strong addition but it won't be enough.
