The Washington Commanders were dealt a blow on Tuesday when it was reported that running back J.D. McKissic would be latching on with the Buffalo Bills. McKissic had reportedly agreed to join the Bills on a deal worth $7 million, but has apparently had a last-minute change of heart. According to Adam Schefter, McKissic is set to spurn the Bills and return to Washington on a new two-year deal.

The deal will be worth the same $7 million he was set to receive from Buffalo, and will certainly come as a shock to the Bills who were expecting to have McKissic compete for backup duties with Zack Moss, behind starter Devin Singletary.

Instead, McKissic will return to his role in the backfield, working alongside Antonio Gibson. Fantasy football owners were hopeful Gibson would get the backfield all to himself this season and work the Commanders' lead rusher, but that won't be the case after all.

Last season, McKissic logged 48 carries for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns, featuring in 11 games for the Football Team.  He's spent the past two seasons carving out a role in Washington's backfield, and he'll look to continue his work with the team in 2022.

Rather than have to compete for the backup role in Buffalo, McKissic will return to a familiar system where he's had success in recent seasons. The former Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions RB has featured in 27 games for the Commanders over the past two seasons, scoring a total of 7 touchdowns, 3 via the ground and 4 as a receiver.
