The Dallas Cowboys have chosen to replace Jason Garrett with Mike McCarthy and one of McCarthy's former players is in support of the move. Soon after hearing the news, Brett Favre reacted to Dallas hiring McCarthy as the team's new head coach via Jon Machota.
Of course, before the multiple retirements, Favre spent the 2006-2007 seasons in McCarthy's first two seasons as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers would go 21-11 in that span and Favre's career in Green Bay would come to a screeching halt.
Before McCarthy landed the job with the Cowboys, Favre was lobbying for McCarthy to get a chance somewhere. McCarthy spent the 2019 season outside of the NFL after being fired by the Packers in favor of Matt LaFleur.
But most people around McCarthy have said that he spent his time off adjusting his coaching schemes. If that is indeed true, fans in Dallas should be elated to have McCarthy as the team's next head coach.
The offensive-minded coach was let go by the Packers after his schemes became outdated in today's NFL. In the event that he tweaked his system, the Cowboys finally found their long-term solution at head coach.
The Cowboys have an extremely talented roster but everything relies on what happens to Dak Prescott. As Favre pointed out, McCarthy should be a positive influence on Prescott.
Now that Dallas has hired their head coach, they will undoubtedly turn their attention to figuring a way to retain Prescott in 2020 and beyond. Whether it be by way of the franchise tag or a long-term deal, the duo of Prescott and McCarthy should be interesting to watch moving forward.
