Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott went down in America's Team's NFC East matchup with rival New York Giants on Sunday. The Week 5 tilt saw Prescott, 27, severely hurt his leg and had to be carted off the field in a terrible, gut-punching moment.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Prescott is headed to a local hospital to have his injury evaluated.

Unfortunately for Prescott, the lower body injury looked extremely terrible for the former Mississippi State standout's prospects at returning soon. Prescott needed to be lifted up and placed on the cart before leaving the field for the locker room—and now the hospital.

Before the injury, Prescott was helping the Cowboys battle the Giants, including a “Philly/Dallas special” where Dak caught his first career touchdown reception in the first half.

To add insult to injury, Prescott is also on the Cowboys' franchise tag after a controversial offseason saw a back and forth between star passer and the organization over long-term contract extension negotiations. Meaning, Prescott could be a free agent at the conclusion of the 2020 NFL season and not owed any big, guaranteed money for very long by Dallas when the franchise tag expires.

Prescott has been a premier quarterback during the early part of the 2020 season, leading the league in passing yards, attempts, and completions heading into Week 5 despite the Cowboys struggling with a 1-3 record in a very weak NFC East division.

The Cowboys will have to regroup with veteran Andy Dalton, acquired as a free agent last spring, under center for the historic football franchise.
