The league has finally made a ruling on Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott's recent tirade against the game officials following their controversial loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wildcard Round. Unsurprisingly, the 28-year-old has been slapped with a hefty fine by the NFL after Prescott commended Dallas fans for throwing trash at the officials right after the game.

This report comes via ESPN's senior NFL insider Adam Schefter:

$25,000 is a lot of money but it's not exactly going to burn a hole into Prescott's deep pockets. Nevertheless, this sends a strong message to the rest of the NFL about not encouraging bad behavior from the fans, particularly when it comes to their treatment of game officials.

The Cowboys' heartbreaking loss to the 49ers came after the game officials controversially called time on the game without giving Dallas a chance to make one final play. Prescott and Co. were down just six points and a last-second touchdown and field-goal conversion would have secured their spot in the next round. Unfortunately for them, this just was not to be.

To say that Cowboys supporters were disappointed by these turn of events would be a complete understatement. Shortly after the final buzzer, some fans inside the AT&T Stadium decided to throw bottles onto the field in the direction of the game officials. For his part, Prescott initially commended the fans for their actions, saying “credit to them.” The Cowboys star later retracted his statement and apologized for his rash reaction. Nevertheless, the damage was done at that point and this is clearly the perspective the NFL has taken as they hand Prescott his punishment.

The Cowboys' season may have come to another bitter end but Dallas fans can take consolation in the fact that their cornerstone quarterback will be back next season for another run. Prescott signed a massive $160 million, four-year extension last year, which will keep him in the city for the long haul. The Cowboys will be paying Prescott a lot of money in the coming years and the franchise is hoping that they begin getting some return on their investment in the immediate future.
