The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly parted with defensive tackle Gerald McCoy after he ruptured his right quadriceps tendon in training camp, via ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

Gerald McCoy suffered the injury during the first padded practice of camp and is now slated to miss the entire 2020 NFL season once he undergoes surgery. Although he had embraced the prospect of taking on a mentorship role for this group, it appears the team had other plans.

Gerald McCoy will be able to keep his $3 million roster bonus from the three-year, $18 million deal he signed this offseason, however, he will no longer be on the books after that.

The decision to waive Gerald McCoy rather than placing him on injured reserve caught some by surprise since the Cowboys signed him as part of their efforts to revamp their defensive line that included Everson Griffin and Dontari Poe. While he may have been all in on the championship expectations with this team, the decision should free up the veteran to focus on his rehab wherever he pleases before making a decision on where to play.

Gerald McCoy has been a model of consistency when it comes to productions and durability. This will be the longest hiatus of his career after missing a handful of games back in the 2011 campaign. It will be interesting to see if Dallas keeps tabs on his situation come next offseason.

If not, the the four-time All-Pro should have no problem generating interest on the market as long as he is healthy. It is safe to say that Gerald McCoy will be looking to join a contender at this point in his career after all the relocation in recent years.
