Safety Earl Thomas has long been linked to the Dallas Cowboys organization ever since his days with the Seattle Seahawks. Despite the rumors, he never landed at the Lone Star State and instead went to the Baltimore Ravens camp where he spent a season before being released. With the seven-time Pro Bowler now in the free-agent market, the Cowboys finally have a chance to secure the services of the veteran safety.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones vaguely shared the team's stance on acquiring Thomas for the upcoming season:

“Discussions internally, we have discussions that certainly he’s an outstanding football player. We’re sitting here at personnel time and we’re looking for ways to get better and he would be one of several that we would discuss during this particular time as we finalize this roster,” Jones said. “It would be a misleading thing to say we haven’t discussed him, it would be a misleading thing to say that we have.”

Despite the undeniable talent, character problems still haunt Thomas and remain to be a risk to consider for his suitors. Prior to the 2018 season, he did not report to training camp expressing that he would hold out until the Seahawks either renegotiated his current contract or traded him to another team.

His partnership with the Seahawks ended when Thomas was carted off the field in the fourth quarter of a Week 4 matchup. Having sustained a lower leg injury, he gave a single-finger salute towards the direction of head coach Pete Carroll.

A heated altercation between Earl Thomas and teammate Chuck Clark also ended his short tenure with the Ravens and was subsequently released from the team.

The Cowboys remain to be the front-runner to land the All-Pro veteran. Despite the lack of clarity in their statements, we can only see in the coming days whether or not the team did include Earl Thomas in their future plans moving forward.
