Gerald McCoy's first season with the Dallas Cowboys was cut short on Monday after suffering a torn quadriceps tendon during a practice drill. Mike McCarthy, the team's new head coach, spoke out on McCoy's season-ending injury.

“Very, very unfortunate. It makes you sick on a personal level, anytime you see a player go through this type of injury,” McCarthy said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “I can’t tell you what he has meant to our D-line in the short time we’ve been together.”

Earlier this offseason, the Cowboys inked McCoy to a three-year, $18.3 million deal in free agency. The former standout interior defender for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was expected to play a prominent role in Dallas' defense.

Last season, McCoy notched five sacks and 13 quarterback hits in his lone season with the Carolina Panthers. But with him going down with an injury, his future with the Cowboys is already in jeopardy.

Seeing that McCoy is an aging veteran and he's now coming off of a serious injury, Dallas may elect to part ways with him after the 2020 season. As a result, the Cowboys would avoid having to pay him $5 million in 2021.

Besides Gerald McCoy, Dallas also added veteran Dontari Poe and rookie Neville Gallimore to the interior of their defensive line this offseason. However, it could be Trysten Hill, a second-round pick of the Cowboys in 2019, who takes over for McCoy. Or Dallas could be on the market for a proven defensive tackle to replace McCoy.

With training camps underway, there was a ton of hype surrounding Dallas' defensive line unit. Nonetheless, McCoy's unfortunate injury means that everyone else on the defensive front will need to step up in his absence.
