The Dallas Cowboys have fallen short of expectations with their 1-2 start to the 2020 NFL season. Regardless, head coach Mike McCarthy seems to understand the process that goes into a new coaching gig.

McCarthy was made well aware of the championship aspirations in Dallas upon taking the job. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, he feels the biggest challenge in his first year is establishing the team's identity:

“It’s just being in tune with who your team really is at this point. It’s a process that you go through every year with your football team, but you usually start that process in April.”

McCarthy's comments are indicative of the areas of emphasis that new coaches focus on when getting properly acquainted with their teams. Unfortunately, the restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic delayed the process for this year's latest offseason additions.

Despite boasting a losing record heading into Week 4, there is still good reason for the Cowboys to be rather optimistic considering their two losses came against bonafide playoff contenders in the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. Meanwhile, McCarthy's track record in this situation shows that his teams still remain on track to make the postseason.

Out of the four times McCarthy's Green Bay Packers' teams started off 1-2, three still made it to the postseason. The fact that the NFC East is once again shaping up to be the worst division in the NFL should also pay some huge dividends while Dallas continues to go through growing pains.
