Derek Brunson is set to take on Jared Cannonier in a number one contender bout at UFC 271. The winner is expected to face whoever wins the main event between Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.
Jared Cannonier is known for having big power and it's helped him become one of the big names in the UFC's middleweight division. Derek Brunson is aware of the threat but he's not worried about it.
“I know he’s like a good striker, a big powerful guy, but I’m a well-rounded guy,” Brunson told MMA Junkie. “You have to bring a lot more than that to the table. My whole thing in this training camp is to worry about myself and not let guys get lucky and be a complete mixed martial artist.”
Derek Brunson has been big on using his wrestling to get to the top of the division. He started his UFC career as a striker but he's always had a strong wrestling background.
The fight at UFC 271 could end up falling apart if something happens to the card's main event. Both men are willing to step in and Derek Brunson sees why the UFC booked them for the event.
“The UFC, I think they just wanted a backup for the title fight in case somebody went down and got injured,” Brunson continued. “They have two guys, ‘85ers, three and four-ranked guys that can jump in for the title shot. I’ve been waiting for that title shot. So yeah, if the opportunity comes up, for sure.”
