Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner was ejected following the conclusion of the first inning of Arizona's game against the Marlins. Bumgarner, who surrendered a run in the first inning, was tossed after receiving the typical hand check from the umpire for foreign substances. The umpire and Bumgarner exchanged words following the hand check which led to Bumgarner absolutely blowing a gasket.

It isn't exactly clear as to what set him off. Knowing Bumgarner, it might have been something as little as the umpire touching his hand for too long. As far as we know Bumgarner was tossed purely for his words with the umpire and not for any form of foreign substances.

Bally Sports Arizona shared the following video on Twitter contrasting the difference in hand checks for the Marlins pitcher as compared to Madison Bumgarner. So perhaps Bumgarner has a legitimate gripe.

MLB will need to look into making sure each pitcher is treated equally when it comes to these hand checks. Practically massaging a pitcher's hand, as this umpire did, is not the assigned protocol.

Nonetheless, Madison Bumgarner has a history of running into trouble on the diamond. He has yelled at hitters for bat-flipping and not running out of the box, fighting with Yasiel Puig on a rather consistent basis, and having stare-down competitions with umpires.

So it really came as no surprise to see him lose his mind after this incident. It will be interesting to hear what Bumgarner has to say about it after the game. The eventual Jomboy breakdown will surely help clarify exactly what happened as well.
