Doc Rivers' net worth in 2021: $50 million
However, what might have gone unnoticed (or forgotten) for some is the fact Rivers was actually a pretty good baller in his heyday. Throughout his 13 years in the league, he was also able to build up quite a hefty bank account.
Rivers called it a career in 1996, and as of 2020, he's been out of the game for over two decades already. Nevertheless, he continues to pocket some serious dough through his coaching contract. Let's take a look at just how much Doc Rivers is worth.
Celebrity net worth lists Rivers to have a net worth of $50 million as of 2021. That's a lot more than majority of the players in the NBA today. Here's how he managed to be one of the wealthiest personalities in the league.
It was in 1983 when it all started for Rivers when he was selected in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks. He wasn't exactly star material when he entered the league, and this resulted in a conservative starting salary for him as a rookie. In his first season, Rivers pocketed only $105,000 for the entire year.
Rivers' rise continued as the years passed by, and by the 1987-88 season, he was already earning $450,000 per year. That also happened to be the 6-foot-4 point guard's lone All-Star season, after he averaged 14.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 9.3 assists, and 1.8 steals.
He had already established himself as one of the best playmakers in the entire league at that point, which prompted the Hawks to give him a nice bump in his salary come the 1989-90 season. This came out to the tune of $895,000 for that campaign alone.
Rivers was the traded to the Los Angeles Clippers the following season for a slew of draft picks. This was when he finally hit the $1 million-mark, with LA paying him $1.2 million that year.
His stint with the Clippers as a player was short-lived, though, with the team trading him away again the following summer. He spent three years with the New York Knicks before signing as a free agent with the San Antonio Spurs in 1994.
Interestingly, Rivers was paid onl $109,000 during his first season with the Spurs, but on his second and final season, this shot up to $1.2 million.
Rivers hanged it up in 1996, and at that point, he had already amassed a grand total of $8.4 million in salaries.
He took a three-year hiatus before returning to the NBA, this time in a coaching capacity. His first gig was as a head coach of the Orlando Magic, where he spent the first four years of his coaching career. Notably, he won the Coach of the Year award in his first season with the Magic, due in large part to the fact that he almost led his team to the playoffs despite early season expectations of the Magic finishing dead last in the league.
In 2003, however, after just 11 games into the season, Orlando decided to part ways with Rivers. He spent the rest of the season serving as a commentator for NBA on ABC.
It wasn't long before the Boston Celtics snagged him up, though, with Rivers officially taking over the helm for the C's starting the 2004-05 campaign. Despite some criticism early on, Rivers was a huge success in Boston. He ended up leading the squad to the 2008 title, behind the Big 3 of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen.
In 2011, it was reported that Rivers signed a $35 million deal with the Celtics, making him one of the highest-paid coaches of all time. At that point, Rivers has also become one of the most sought-after coached in the league. So much so, that the Los Angeles Clippers actually traded for him in exchange for a future draft pick. It's not everyday that you hear about a coach being traded, right?
In his first year in LA, Rivers led the Clippers to a franchise record 57 wins. This led to a promotion as the team's President of Basketball Operations, with Rivers now acting on two capacities for the organization.
In 2014, Rivers penned another huge deal with the Clippers, amounting to $50 million for a five-year extension.
Rivers also does some real estate business on the side. It's nothing serious, though, just more of a buy-live-sell sort of arrangement. He reportedly purchased a condo unit worth $5.5 million when he first arrived in LA, which he sold in 2014. He moved his family to a huge mansion in the Hills, which reportedly cost him $8.2 million. In 2019, he listed the mansion for sale for a whopping $11.2 million, so that's even more money into his pocket once he is able to sell the property.
