The Los Angeles Dodgers and outfielder Teoscar Hernandez are in agreement on a one-year, $23.5 million contract, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The Dodgers were in need of one more outfielder, specifically one who is right-handed and can hit left-handed pitching, and Hernandez fits that mold. He is another significant addition for Los Angeles in an offseason headlined by the signings of Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Hernandez emerged as a quality offensive player in MLB during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays, especially in 2020, 2021 and 2022, when he had a 130 wRC+ or higher in each of those three seasons, according to FanGraphs. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in the 2023 season, and recorded a 105 wRC+ moving to a more pitcher-friendly ballpark.

Teoscar Hernandez struggled early on with the Mariners, then heated up a bit as the season went along, like the team did as well. Ultimately the Mariners came up a game short of the playoffs.

As mentioned before, the Dodgers needed a right-handed bat that could hit left-handed pitching, even though the team brought back Jason Heyward and brought in Manuel Margot this offseason. Hernandez posted a solid 120 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers in 2023, according to FanGraphs. He had a 176 wRC+ against lefties in 2022, and a staggering 203 mark in 2021.

This signing filled what was likely the last need the Dodgers had this offseason. Hernandez was arguably one of, if not the best player available to fill that hole. His signing only strengthens a Dodgers team that already looked stacked heading into the 2024 season.
