The Miami Dolphins firing head coach Brian Flores set a huge chain of events into motion. Flores' accusations of tanking against the team's owner and first-hand experiences with the NFL's hiring practices underscore why change is needed.

After Flores helped lead the team to two straight winning seasons, the Dolphins had their work cut out for them as they searched for a new head coach. Now, they have one, as they have hired San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. He becomes the first minority candidate to be hired as a head coach during the 2022 head coaching cycle.

The 37-year-old McDaniel spent last year as the 49ers' offensive coordinator after spending four years as their run game coordinator. He has spent time as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans prior to serving under Kyle Shanahan.

McDaniels' job in Miami will be to tap into the potential of Tua Tagovailoa. The 23-year-old was embarrassingly turnover-prone this past season and has not yet shown he can lead an offense at the professional level. The franchise wants to build around him and likely hired McDaniel because he is interested in doing the same.

Jaylen Waddle, though, had a stellar rookie season. After seeing what McDaniel did with Deebo Samuel, it will be interesting to see if Waddle is used in a similar, non-traditional way. The Dolphins will have to add more pieces and re-sign tight end Mike Gesicki this off season.

The Dolphins came close to the playoffs under Flores but it wasn't enough for them to keep him. McDaniel will be under the microscope as he tries to get Miami back to the playoffs.
