The Miami Dolphins have made it no secret that they intend on using this offseason to build upon their resources. As a result, they have parted ways with a number of their key players going into free agency.

Among the notable names is tight end Julius Thomas. According to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports, Miami is officially releasing Thomas:

Dolphins are officially releasing TE Julius Thomas, per league source. Another pass-catcher on the open market.

It has been a rough stretch for Thomas, to say the least. He burst onto the scene during the 2013 campaign with the Denver Broncos. After quickly establishing himself as one of the premier receiving tight ends in the league, it was not long before he received lucrative offers from a number of teams.

He ultimately wound up signing a prodigious five-year, $46 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the 2015 NFL season. Needless to say, it was not long before he struggled to play up to his contract. As a result, he was traded to Miami last offseason and subsequently restructured a new two-year deal. Unfortunately, his production still has yet to mirror that of his spectacular 2013 campaign.

That said, it will be interesting to see what kind of market Thomas can still attract after all these disappointing years. The former two-time Pro Bowler made his bones as a threat in the passing game. However, since he is not the mismatch he once was, he will need to start focusing on being productive in the run game.
