The Miami Dolphins have decided to address their tight end position early on this offseason. The Dolphins have signed Dwayne Allen after his meeting with the team.

This news comes according to Adam Schefter via Twitter. The deal is worth up to $7 million over two years. Allen was recently cut by the Patriots, thus making him able to sign before the new league year begins on March 13th.

The signing of Allen shouldn't come as a surprise as newly hired head coach Brian Flores comes from the Patriots as well. Allen was traded to the Patriots in 2017 for a fourth-round pick.

The former Patriots tight end played behind Rob Gronkowski and was used in running situations for the most part. The Patriots likely saw the $7.3 million cap hit in 2019 as too much for a tight end like Allen.

Thus, cutting him made the most sense for the reigning Super Bowl champions. At the least, Allen got a Super Bowl ring before he gets to play in Miami. What a life.

Allen has shown flashes of being capable of being a receiving threat, but hasn't been consistent enough. Before joining the Patriots, Allen had a few solid years with the Indianapolis Colts.

In five seasons with the Colts, Allen totaled 126 receptions, 1,451 yards, and 19 touchdowns. His ability to run block makes him a valuable piece in any offense.

Signing Allen is a solid move for the Dolphins, who lack a consistent threat at the tight end position. The Flores era in Miami begins with the Dolphins signing a former Patriots player.
