Despite having a subpar defense, the Miami Dolphins still managed to make the playoffs in 2022. Now, the Dolphins are looking to upgrade on that side of the ball, and Vic Fangio has emerged as a top candidate for the defensive coordinator position.

According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Vic Fangio is scheduled to interview for the job, and it could turn out to be more than that by the end of the session.

The Dolphins are looking for a replacement after the team fired Josh Boyer at season's end. If Fangio is the man chosen to replace Boyer, that will probably be looked at as an upgrade, given his history. Fangio has been the ringleader of top defenses for the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears, and he served as a defensive consultant for a Philadelphia Eagles defense that had 70 sacks this season. He also has head coaching experience with the Denver Broncos.

Whether it's Fangio or whoever, the task to revamp the Dolphins defense will be daunting. Miami was 24th in points allowed and 18th in yards given up per game. In their season-ending playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills, they gave up 423 total yards and 25 first downs in the 34-31 defeat.

If the defense can get up on par with the offense for next season, the team could become a threat to advance further in the playoffs. With players like Christian Wilkins, Bradley Chubb and Xavien Howard, Miami has cornerstones to build around on each level of that side of the ball.

Only time will tell if Fangio gets the job, but if he does, look out for improvement with the Dolphins defense.
