Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been in the league for six years now, but he’s nowhere close to being considered a “franchise quarterback” by most football observers. However, Denver Broncos superstar Von Miller feels Tannehill has indeed shown he’s capable of being that type of player for the Dolphins.

“I think he has it in him,” Miller said per Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. “But he’s shown it before. He’s shown that he is a franchise quarterback. He’s just got to stay healthy. That’s the name of the game for everybody.”

Miller’s comments should be taken with a grain of salt. He and Tannehill were college teammates at Texas A&M, so he’s not exactly the most impartial observer.

Although, Miller is correct that Tannehill has indeed shown flashes of the ability which saw him drafted eighth overall by the Dolphins in the 2012 draft. From 2013-15, Tannehill averaged 4,000 passing yards per game, which is right around the bottom of the top 10 in the league.

However, he just hasn’t been able to translate his performances into wins on a consistent enough basis. The Dolphins have made the playoffs just once during his tenure, which came in 2016. But even though he went down with an ACL injury late in the year, the team’s success that season was primarily because of the running game led by Jay Ajayi.

As a quarterback who relied heavily on his athleticism to make plays outside the pocket, it remains to be seen whether Tannehill can be the same type of player again when he returns from his knee injury. If not, then Miller will likely have to walk back what he said about his fellow Aggie.
