Rumors about the Miami Dolphins targeting Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 NFL Draft have started to gain some steam. It appears they have even determined a potential draft strategy should it comes to fruition.

According to Chris Perkins of The Athletic, the Dolphins could look to pick up Iowa tackle Tristan Wirfs to help complement the lefty Tagovailoa:

Remember, the Dolphins already have a starting right tackle in veteran Jesse Davis. Yes, Davis is better at right guard, but he serves a more valuable purpose at right tackle.

There’s one specific situation, however, in which Wirfs might be more interesting to the Dolphins, and that’s if Miami selects Alabama southpaw quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with their first pick in Round 1.

If the Dolphins take Tagovailoa early on, the chances increase that they would draft Wirfs because they’d want someone to protect Tagovailoa’s blind side. There’s no better right tackle prospect in the draft than Wirfs.

The prospect of the Dolphins taking a right tackle with one of their three first-round picks is certainly not too far-fetched. If they are going to land their future franchise quarterback in Tagovailoa, it makes sense that they would surround him with the best protection possible.

Although the Miami already has a blindside protector for the lefty Tagovailoa in right tackle Jesse Davis, they could still fortify that side of the offensive line with the addition of Wirfs. This would result is Davis sliding back into his true position at guard while securing two foundational pieces on offense for the future.

Of course, the Dolphins have a number of other pressing matters on their roster that will need to be addressed this offseason. They will also have to prepare for the possibility that the teams ahead of them in the draft are also intrigued by Tagovailoa's potential.
