A much-awaited revamped Golden State Warriors team took the court on October 25 to start the season. After a 6-1 preseason record, they started the regular season the same way they ended the former — with a loss.
But it wasn't so much the loss, but the magnitude of it that made headlines and was the cause of jokes, laughs, and internet memes across the web.
According to forward Draymond Green, a 29-point spanking at the hands of the retooled San Antonio Spurs was exactly what the team needed to get gears in motion.
“That was one of the best things that could ever happened to ourselves,” Green told Adrian Wojnarowski in The Vertical podcast on Monday.
A game in which the Warriors looked too small and too soft was a wake-up call for the players and coaches, prioritizing defense instead of offensive chemistry, which was clearly there from the start.
A tandem of Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge torched the Warriors for 61 points combined, including 20-of-21 from the free-throw line. And an 18-12-6-5-1 line by Green was proof of how much he was being tasked to do and how much more others needed to step up defensively.
While the Warriors are among the worst in points allowed, as they haven't yet solved their defensive woes, they are still at an elite plateau in terms of point differential, which has helped them to a 13-2 record and net them nine straight wins.
