Chicago Bulls guard and future Hall-of-Famer Dwyane Wade has reportedly accepted his $24 million player option to remain at least one more year, barring any surprising trades, with his hometown team. This move was expected, as at 35-years-old, Wade is unlikely to receive a better offer, money wise. Even though his stats were pretty good, especially for his age, Wade is still in a steady decline and paying him long term would be a mistake.
After news broke that he was accepting the player option, many Chicago Bulls fans expressed their grief over Wade accepting this option, deeming it is too much money for a past-his-prime player. While their discomfort with the situation is justified, Wade is not to blame. He took less money from the Miami Heat organization on multiple occasions to give the front office as much salary cap room as possible to provide him with a championship contender. Due to that, taking this money was an expected move.
The criticisms for his move came to Wade personally, and he responded on Twitter.
In his tweet, Wade brought upon an important point. If Wade was even five or six years younger, he would probably be offered the max deal with those numbers, which is clearly proven by a lot of other players who even have worse statistics than Wade getting close-to-max contracts.
However, it is hard to state why this contract is so bad for Bulls fans. Wade is still an entertaining player and it is for only one year. With more reports claiming that Jimmy Butler wants to leave, it would be false to claim that the cap space taken by Wade would be used to create a championship contender. Also, Wade is someone who has seen everything in his 14 years in the league, so he would be a great role model and mentor to younger players on the Bulls roster.
