Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was just benched by head coach Doug Pederson in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts. If you ask former Eagles quarterback Jeff Garcia, however, he believes this might actually work in Wentz's favor.

According to Garcia, who now serves as an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area, this could serve as a much-needed break for an embattled Wentz:

“I think Carson needs to take a step back and take some of the pressure off of his shoulders,” said Garcia, via Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“Understand that, hey, there are some struggles with Philadelphia right now. The offensive line is a struggling unit. They’ve had a different group of characters playing throughout the season. The wide receiving corps, the targets that he has. That has been a mix of different players. So him going out there and trying to put it all on his own shoulders, probably puts more pressure on trying to play perfect football. You’re not going to play perfect football.”

The last straw for Wentz came during Philadelphia's 30-16 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 13. The 27-year-old completed just 6-of-15 passes for 79 yards, which resulted in Pederson yanking Wentz and replacing him with Hurts.

The rookie quickly provided a spark by leading a touchdown drive, but he wasn't able to pull off a comeback. Hurts wound up completing five out of 12 passes for 109 yards. In addition to his touchdown pass, he also threw an interception.

After some deliberation, Pederson decided to hand over the reins of the offense to Hurts moving forward. Whether or not this is nothing more than a temporary tweak or a more permanent adjustment remains to be seen. It could depend on Hurts' performance, or perhaps the Eagles are just ready to let him sink or swim.
