It's early in training camp, but Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts is already getting rave reviews from his coaches and teammates. And he is showing off the talent that made him one of the most successful players in college football history.

Inevitably, the hype around Hurts is building, and Philly fans will be eager to see their second-round pick under center at some point—or at least in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

Not so fast.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said that while Hurts will continue getting reps with the second-team offense, he's not on the verge of usurping Nate Sudfeld for the backup quarterback spot.

“Nate is our No. 2,” Pederson told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Jalen is still learning…he’s doing some really good things for us…he’s learning our system…He’s got some athleticism. We’ve seen that in practice. But Nate has done as nice job for us, and Nate has come in and really done everything we’ve asked him to do from a backup position.”

The Eagles have been impressed with Hurts' progress learning their system—especially considering the limited offseason activity due to COVID-19. However, Sudfeld's experience within the Eagles offense gives him an advantage over the rookie.

“He’s still got some learning to do…but nothing is too big for Jalen,” Pederson said. “He’s been in a number of offenses in his career, whether it’s been at Oklahoma, Alabama…And he’s done a nice job just understanding, and now it’s a matter of just detailing that work and applying it to what he sees defensively when he gets an opportunity.”

Pederson also praised Hurts' dynamism as a runner. “You can see him with his legs…the ability to escape the pocket, things he did in college, and throws a good ball and all those things. Those are things we’ve just got to continue to keep working with him on as he grows as a quarterback in our offense.”
