Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts hopes to make the most out of his opportunities as the team's current starting quarterback for their remaining games in the 2020 season. The rookie likened his goals to an uncanny comparison and claimed that he was aiming to become a ‘coffee bean' for the Eagles moving forward.
“The thing with me, I always try to never get too high, never get too low out there,” said Hurts via Sports Illustrated. “Try to do my job to my best abilities. Doing that, impacting people, bringing people up around me. Always take somebody with you and create that camaraderie, that community. And all those things, all those characteristics, they’re contagious.”
“Just trying to be a coffee bean.”
While Eagles fans might have been befuddled by the idea behind the odd metaphor, apparently, Hurts has already used it in the past, albeit with more explanation. Hurts described being a caffeine-inducing pellet back in August of 2019 where he first shared the context of the statement.
“You know, I think you’ve got to try to be the coffee bean,” Hurts said when he was still a player for the Oklahoma Sooners. “Whenever I say coffee bean, you’ve got the carrot and the egg. You put an egg in boiling water, it hardens up. It doesn’t affect anything. The carrot softens up. The coffee bean spreads and gets stronger and impacts the people around you, you know? I’m trying to be that coffee bean.”
The rookie has been fairly impressive especially in his first start under center for the Eagles where he led the team to a 24-21 upset victory against the dominant New Orleans Saints in Week 14 proceedings. He generated 167 passing yards on 17-of-30 passes completed and a touchdown for the team in the win.
While his numbers aren't exactly eye-popping, his youthful presence under center managed to rejuvenate an Eagles squad that's been on the brink of giving up on the season.
After a successful debut as Philadelphia's QB1, Jalen Hurts' number has been called to start under center once again versus the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15. Hopefully, he will get to impact other people like a ‘coffee bean' further down the road and his career will ultimately pan out the way he envisioned it to be.
