Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is expected to make his decision as to who will be the team’s Week 1 starting quarterback by Friday. But if right tackle Lane Johnson were to choose, Carson Wentz would get the nod over Nick Foles.

Johnson believes Wentz looks good to go based on what he’s seen from the young QB in practice. He even went so far as to say he’d be surprised if Wentz wasn’t named the starter.

“[Wentz] looks ready to me,” Johnson said per Dave Zangaro of NBC Philadelphia. “I saw him throw a ball a couple weeks ago about 65 yards, so he looks about as impressive as I’ve seen.”

Wentz, who is still recovering from a torn ACL, has been back in practice for the past couple of weeks now. He’s returned to 11-on-11 drills and splitting first-team reps with Foles. He was also spotted putting some work in before their preseason finale. However, Wentz has yet to pass the final hurdle in his recovery, which is to get cleared for contact.

The Eagles kick off their season on Thursday night against the Falcons, which may be just a bit too soon for Wentz to make his return despite Johnson’s observations. But given Wentz's importance to the Eagles, it would be more sensible to err on the side of caution and wait until Wentz is completely healthy before they throw him back onto the field.
