This isn't exactly a new development. But just like the contract in question, it's a narrative that's definitely here to stay. Before the 2019 season, Wentz inked a lucrative four-year, $128 million extension with the Eagles. Therefore, it is going to be tough for Philadelphia to move on from the former No. 2 overall pick anytime soon.
If the Eagles were to surprisingly release Wentz ahead of the 2021 season, they would accrue nearly $60 million in dead cap. It seems like the soonest that Philadelphia could part ways with Wentz is in the 2022 season, but they'd still accumulate $24 million in dead cap if he were released.
Article Continues BelowThe failures of Wentz have been displayed prominently this season with the Eagles mightily struggling. Through the first 11 games of the season, Wentz has completed a career-worst 58.1 percent of his passes for 2,541 yards and 16 touchdowns.
At the same time, he also leads the league with 15 interceptions while fumbling the ball 10 times, losing four of them. In response to Wentz being unable to perform up to expectations, some fans have been calling for him to be benched in favor of Jalen Hurts.
Hurts has only been used in special offensive packages thus far, with him usually running the ball. Head coach Doug Pederson, whose job is in jeopardy in the final weeks of the season, has begun trying to get Hurts more involved.
Despite the groans from fans in Philadelphia, whoever is the head coach of the franchise moving forward, seems to be married for Wentz for years to come. There are 128 million reasons why Wentz is likely going to remain in an Eagles uniform beyond this season.
