Ecuador and Venezuela have been as tight as possible in international competition since 2017. The teams drew three straight games, including a 2-2 tie in the 2021 Copa America tournament. Venezuela finally broke through for a win in World Cup qualification in 2021 before Ecuador returned the favor a month later. Their last matchup was in November, duking it out for a 0-0 draw. It is time to continue our Copa America odds series with an Ecuador-Venezuela prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Ecuador has been a busy team in international competition. They began the stretch in March with a 2-0 victory over Guatemala before losing the same score to Italy. They had a run of good form in their three friendlies in June, losing 1-0 to Argentina, then beating Bolivia 3-1 and Honduras 2-1.

The Venezuelans could rue their inability to schedule a friendly match before this tournament. They had a friendly against Colombia in December, losing 1-0, which led them to two friendlies in March against Italy and Guatemala. Their loss to Italy and disappointing draw against Guatemala cratered all the momentum they had built in World Cup Qualifying. Venezuela must find their game quickly in this tournament, which won’t be easy after not playing since March.

Why Ecuador Will Win

Ecuador could be able to jump on Venezuela in this match since the Venezuelans opted not to have any friendly matches in the lead-up to the tournament. Ecuador has gone the other way, playing three friendlies in June with some positive results. Venezuela looked good competitively under Bautista, but their last friendly matches in March left some questions. They lost 2-1 to Italy, then looked lifeless in a 0-0 draw against Guatemala.

Ecuador has a deep squad full of players playing on some of the top teams in Europe. Enner Valencia is the exception, as the man with 41 career international goals joined Internacional in the Brazil League this past season. Ecuador does have Kevin Rodriguez alongside Valencia, and they also have Moises Caicedo from Chelsea and Piero Huncapie from Bayer Leverkusen.

Why Venezuela Will Win

Venezuela’s decision not to play any friendlies may not be a big issue, since they are riding high from their recent results under Fernando Batista. They’ve lost just one of their last six competitive matches with Batista, which includes a 3-0 win over Chile and a draw with Brazil.

Their leading striker is still Salomon Rondon, but Yangel Herrera could soon overtake that moniker. Herrera was a star for Girona in La Liga this season, a team that overachieved their way to a spot in the Champions League.

Final Ecuador-Venezuela Prediction & Pick

Ecuador has a case to be one of the deepest teams in the Copa America field. They have players from the top teams in Europe, and their experience on those big stages is invaluable on a big stage like the Copa America.

Venezuela has a good team, but they’ve made questionable decisions in tournament preparations. Ecuador has been steadily building momentum with manager Felix Sanchez recently, and his managerial brilliance will help them overcome Venezuela in this matchup. The teams drew in November, but they’ve been going on opposite trajectories since that game.
