There have been many legal battles between musicians John Oates and Daryl Hall, the members of Hall & Oates. However, it seems like, despite all the trouble, their work means a lot to John.
PEOPLE revealed that John Oates is proud of their musical accomplishments in a recent interview on David Yontef's Behind the Velvet Rope podcast.
John Oates opens up about working with Daryl Hall
As for the legal battles, Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates to stop him from selling his share of a joint business venture to a 3rd party. Whole Oats Enterprises (WOE) entered into an agreement in October of 2021, but on November 9, Hall started an arbitration process against Oates. This would prevent him from transferring 100% of his right, title, and interest in Whole Oats to a buyer who was 3rd party.
There's more to the lawsuit, including a restraining order against Oates.
Though it's clear they're not on the same page these days, Oates is happy with what they've accomplished as a duo.
“You can't ignore the fact that the Hall & Oates catalog of hits and the 50-year career will always trump almost anything that Daryl does on his own or I do on my own, which is OK because I'm very proud of what Daryl and I created together,” he said. “I think we made music that will stand the test of time.”
He added, “I don't like to live in the past. I make the analogy of what it's like when you go to a great museum, and you're really excited to go and see all the beautiful paintings or the exhibits or whatever it might be, and then near the end, your feet start to hurt, and you say, ‘You know what? I can't wait to get out of here.' That's kind of how I feel about it.”
John Oates also said, “I have moved on. It's just a matter of living in my present.”
