On May 22, Polo G shared a post on Instagram announcing that he had finished his popular “Angels in the Sky” snippet and would release the full song if the post received 100,000 comments.

The post did reach the hundred thousand mark and did so in less than 24 hours. On Sunday, Polo announced that he was indeed keeping his promise and would be releasing the song on streaming services on Friday, May 31. It will also be included as the 13th track on his upcoming album Hood Poet.

The history of Polo G’s most popular unreleased song

Ever since Polo G premiered it on an Instagram Live video four years ago, the snippet which was popularly titled “Angels in the Sky” by fans has been one of Polo‘s most requested songs. The unreleased snippet did not see the light of day on either The Goat or Hall of Fame and many fans had resigned themselves to the fact that this song would stay in the vault forever, never to be released. Unlike some leaks, we’ve only had a 40-second snippet of this song.

Fans have been consistently expressing their desire for this song to be released, and that wish is finally being granted. Before this song was officially titled, fans ran with the “Angels in the Sky” name after one of the most popular lines in the snippet. It’s clear that Polo listens to his fans and he has obliged, as the song will be released under the “Angels in the Sky” title.

Based on the snippet, fans who have been asking for Polo to go back to his old style will likely be very happy. This song was originally recorded during The Goat era, between late-2019 and mid-2020. It features the energetic yet melodic flow that the Chicago rhymer is known for, along with heartfelt lyrics that tell a story and are relatable to a variety of audiences.

Lines such as “Gotta pray over your kids because it’s dangerous in the Chi / Walking slow up to that casket tears raining from his eyes / Homies left forever I ain’t never get to wave or say goodbye” paint a vivid and emotionally gripping picture of life while growing up in impoverished areas of the Windy City.

As the snippet goes on, Polo drops a few bars featuring the tough yet emotionally vulnerable lines that resonate with all audiences, whether the listener is part of the street life or not.

“Angels in the Sky” represents Polo G at his best

Polo raps with the type of vivid depiction of hunger and trauma that made him popular, singing, “Hard-bodied, yeah, we gangsters, but that pain done made us cry / Used to wake up so f*cked up, like I can't wait until I die.”

His ability to demonstrate toughness and the street lifestyle while also emphasizing how it makes him feel and affects him is a powerful trait and is one of the things that makes Polo so beloved.

He talks about self-medicating while also dropping a quick brag about his new lifestyle, rapping “Now I'm foreign whippin', thinkin' 'bout new chains that I can buy.” He then follows that up with the iconic line that gave the song its name: “Devil breathin' down my neck but I got angels in the sky.” Anybody who has lost someone they care about can relate to these lines.

He then sings a reflective line that nearly everyone can relate to, rapping “I can't reveal the way I really feel, it's hard to try.”

Could this begin the next phase of the rollout for Hood Poet?

The number seven has significant meaning as an angelic number, and it’s interesting that he’s releasing it on May 31. Polo has been teasing Hood Poet since 2022, and this could finally be the beginning of the real rollout of the project. This definitely fits in with the overall theme of the project, “He Overcame Obstacles Despite Pain or Emotional Trauma.”

Could this track become a #1 hit?

The last song that had this level of hype for Polo was “RAPSTAR,” and that turned into his biggest hit and only #1 overall song.

It remains to be seen if he’ll be able to reach the heights he once had, and if “Angels in the Sky” will bring Polo back to the top of the industry where he was before his extended hiatus. If the past is any indication, though, Lil Capalot has one of the most loyal fan bases in music and his fanbase is extremely energized about this grail of a song finally being released.

It also helps that the full song was never leaked, unlike some other unreleased songs. Therefore, fans have only heard the 42nd snippet, but have never heard the entire song. This has only increased the excitement around this announcement, and it’s likely that the fans will be streaming the song over and over again once it is finally released.

The Goat featured some of Polo's best work, including songs such as “21,” “33,” and “I Know.” It’s clear from the snippet on Instagram that “Angels in the Sky” was recorded during that same time period. This track has a chance to bring Polo back to his roots and offer a look at what fans often considered to be his best era of music.

One of the songs on The Goat was titled “Don’t Believe The Hype,” and on Friday we’ll see if “Angels in the Sky” lives up to the hype. If the snippet was any indication, Polo G might just have his next big hit on his hands as well as a song that can speak to people in their darkest moments, helping them reconnect with loved ones who have passed on by reminding listeners of the angels who are watching over them.

“Angels in the Sky” will be released on May 31.
