Epic Games Store did a lot of work to get their Epic Games Store off the ground. They spent lots of money to get games to launch exclusively on the platform. Epic also launched with a weekly free game giveaway to all users that cost them millions. It mostly paid off in terms of getting people on the platform, but not in terms of revenue.
However, these efforts do not paint the complete picture of the lengths Epic would go through to make EGS attractive versus Steam, its primary competitor. New reports suggest that Epic Games even tried to make a deal with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Apparently, the Fortnite creators have been trying to get their console exclusives on PC via the EGS. Now, none of these apparently pushed through, but it shows CEO Tim Sweeney's ambitions.
According to the documents, the company offered Sony $200 million for 4-6 titles on the EGS. However, Sony hasn't come back to them yet and Epic is “awaiting feedback.” Meanwhile, any talks about bringing their exclusives on the EGS have been opposed by Microsoft's Game Pass team. They also noted that there seems to be a closer relationship between Microsoft's Phil SPencer and Steam's Gabe Newell. Finally, as for Nintendo, even EGS thought that approaching them with a shared exclusivity deal is like shooting for the moon, given the history of Nintendo's hermit-like isolation when it comes to first-party titles.
It makes sense that among three, only Sony seems to still be on the fence. After all, previous exclusives like Death Stranding, Horizon Zero Dawn, and eventually, Days Gone, find their way to PC, but via Steam. However, the documents have been inconclusive about these talks. Therefore, we don't think anyone should hold their breath for a potential Sony re-release on the EGS just yet.
