We are currently faced with some sad news after it was reported that Michael Johnson, the son of renowned TNT broadcaster Ernie Johnson, has died at the age of 33.

Ernie Johnson himself confirmed the reports as he sent out a truly heartbreaking message via Twitter:

“We are grieving and at the same time so grateful for having been witnesses to a miraculous 33 years with michael,” Ernie Johnson tweeted.

Johnson shed more light on the situation in a separate Instagram post as he discussed Michael's genetic disorder:

“This guy we adopted from Romania in 1991 and diagnosed with duchenne muscular dystrophy lived a miraculous life of 33 years. We lost michael johnson today and we’re crushed. But we also know we’ll see him again…and that sustains us,” Johnson wrote.

The NBA also released an official statement on Michael's untimely passing as they joined Ernie Johnson and the rest of his family in mourning:

“The NBA mourns the passing of Michael Johnson, the son of Turner Sports’ Ernie Johnson. Michael was admired by so many around the league for his remarkable courage and perseverance. We send our heartfelt condolences to Ernie, Cheryl and their family during this difficult time.”

Johnson's employer, Turner Sports, likewise sent a message of grief amid this tragic development:

“We are heartbroken over the passing of Cheryl and Ernie's beloved son, Michael, a true hero who uplifted and brought joy to everyone he touched,” Turner Sports said in a statement (h/t ESPN). “The family's love, faith and commitment to one another will forever be an inspiration to us. Our deepest condolences are with Cheryl, Ernie and their family, friends and loved ones as we mourn with them.”

Ernie Johnson has been with Turner Sports for many years now. He has been the host of the long-running program Inside the NBA which he currently co-hosts with Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Johnson family.
