The Atlanta Falcons went 7-9 in 2019. While that record is not great, it could have been a lot worse.

They started the year 1-7, then 3-9, before ending the year on a four-game winning streak. That late-season success showed there are pieces on this team that could help build a winner. Pieces that Atlanta should be trying very hard to keep.

One of those pieces is De'Vondre Campbell. The linebacker has been solid his entire career, but had a star-making season in 2019.

Campbell set new career highs in tackles (129), tackles for loss (6), forced fumbles (3), and interceptions (2). He also had two sacks (which tied his career best) and five pass deflections.

All-in-all, it was a great individual year for Campbell.

However, he is set to be a free agent this year. The good news for the Falcons though, is that they have begun “preliminary” contract talks with the linebacker.

Atlanta will definitely want to monitor this situation. The biggest problem though is that agent Drew Rosenhaus is correct, there will be a lot of interest in Campbell.

That means a lot of teams will likely be offering the linebacker deals. This could jack up the price of the linebacker and make it hard for Atlanta to justify bringing him back.

It's good that they are starting the contract talks now though, as they can work out some of type of grounding. Something that they can build upon. It certainly gives them an advantage over the rest of the NFL when going after Campbell.

That being said, we likely won't get news on where Campbell is signing for a bit. He will likely want to see what type of interest there is for him from other teams, as someone may be willing to offer a lot more than the Falcons. So we will just have to wait and see where Campbell decides to go.
