The Atlanta Falcons have signed linebacker Deion Jones to a four-year, $57 million contract extension, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The deal features $34 million in guaranteed money and will keep Jones with the Falcons through 2023.

Jones is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played just six games due to injuries, registering 53 tackles, a sack, a couple of interceptions, a forced fumble, six passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was originally selected by Atlanta in the second round (52nd pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 15 contests during his rookie year, racking up 106 tackles, three picks, a forced fumble, 11 passes defended and a pair of defensive scores. Then, the following year, Jones made his first Pro Bowl as a result of tallying 138 tackles, a sack, three interceptions and 10 passes defended over the course of a full 16-game season.

Jones will earn $1.1 million in 2019 before his new contract kicks in.

The Falcons, meanwhile, won just seven games this past season, missing the playoffs for the first time in 2015. Atlanta, which had some poor injury luck defensively, did not look all that competitive at any point of the year.

Prior to 2018, the Falcons had made back-to-back playoff appearances, most notably during the 2016-17 campaign when they made it all the way to the Super Bowl before famously blowing a 28-3 lead in a devastating overtime loss to the New England Patriots.

Atlanta is considered a sleeper in the NFC heading into 2019 thanks to its high-powered offense.
