The Atlanta Falcons are in a strange spot this offseason. They still have a quarterback, Matt Ryan, capable of playing at a high enough level to lead the team to victories. However, the team around Ryan isn't the greatest, yet Atlanta doesn't possess the necessary cap space to do anything about it. Making matters worse is that Ryan's $48.67 million cap hit would be the biggest in NFL history, prompting speculation that the Falcons would be better off cutting ties with a trade of the former MVP to free up space. Amid the trade murmurs, the Falcons revealed their plan for Ryan, per Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

“The Falcons are planning to keep quarterback Matt Ryan, who is under contract for two more seasons. His $48.67 million cap hit would be the largest in NFL history as a result of previous restructures. The Falcons have not yet decided whether they’ll restructure it again to mitigate the cap hit. That’ll be determined as they build out the rest of the roster.”

Per Howe of The Athletic, the Falcons are planning on keeping Matt Ryan in 2022. Ryan, 36, is coming off of a season where he threw for just under 4000 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

It's not too surprising that Ryan, who is under contract for two more seasons, will likely be back in 2022. What is surprising is that Atlanta is undecided on if they'll restructure Ryan's contract or not.

While his large cap hit is the result of previous such restructures, wouldn't it be a lot easier to build a team around Ryan without having to continuously work around that cap figure?

Don't expect a Ryan trade this offseason, though it will be very interesting to see how the Falcons handle the veteran's contract.
