The Atlanta Falcons beefed up their defensive line earlier this week with the acquisition of former Oakland Raiders defensive end Bruce Irvin short after he was released by the team.

In his introductory press conference with the Falcons, Irvin voiced that he wants to help the team by being the missing piece on that side of the ball, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

“I’m the icing on the top,” Irvin said. “I’ve been around, I’ve had success and I know what it takes to be successful.”

Throughout his career, Irvin has shown he can be a factor behind his pass-rushing ability that has seen him total 40.0 sacks through his six-plus years in the league. He had notched 3.0 sacks and six tackles in eight games played this year with the Raiders, which he had garnered 15.0 sacks in his first two years with the team.

Irvin is joining a Falcons defense that has had their fair share of struggles on that side of the ball this season. The team currently ranks 29th in the league giving up 28.3 points per contest that include being 26th overall, 28th against the pass, and 17th against the run. One of the areas that Atlanta has struggled tremendously this season is getting to the quarterback currently being 27th with 17 sacks on the season while opposing quarterbacks hold a 102.5 passer rating.

The addition of Irvin should help that effort and give them another piece to aid their push up the standings having won their last three straight games. Atlanta has pushed their way back up the standings to potentially contend for a playoff spot. Irvin has plenty to offer that could prove to beneficial this season but also may put him in play to be a long-term fixture with the franchise well beyond the 2018 campaign.
