The turbulent year for former Pro Bowl wide receiver Calvin Ridley continued after news broke earlier this week that the NFL was suspending him for an entire year for betting on football. Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, while speaking to TMZ, seemed to think that the NFL had gone too far in suspending the Atlanta Falcons receiver for the entire season.

Aikman was quoted saying the suspension on Atlanta's receiver “seems like an awful lot… On the one hand, you have the league encouraging everybody to gamble,” Aikman said, “and yet, here Calvin Ridley is suspended for an entire season.”

Ridley walked away from football toward the beginning of the 2020 season. He cited personal mental health issues as a reason. It was supposedly during his time away from the game that he bet on NFL games.

The Falcons star receiver acknowledged that he bet on games, including betting on his team. But he says that he did not be against them and only wagered a total of $1,500 on games.

Ridley appeared to have taken the suspension in stride, recognizing it simply gives him more time to get right mentally. The Falcons receiver was coming off his breakout season in 2020. He caught 90 passes for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns. That allowed Atlanta to feel as though they could let Julio Jones go in free agency. Now, the Falcons will be looking for receiver help, desperately.
