Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman will not return this season after landing on injured reserve for most of the year due to a groin injury.

Freeman underwent surgery back in October and has not played since the Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the fifth-year back posting just 14 carries for 68 yards and five receptions for 23 yards on the season.

And with the Falcons having very little to play for entering the final two weeks of the regular season, it sounds like bringing Freeman back this year isn't an option, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

It's been a trying year for both Freeman and the Falcons, with Atlanta now just 5-9 on the season after last Sunday's 40-14 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Overall, injuries on both sides of the ball have kept the team somewhat limited in terms of being able to make a good enough run to get back in the playoff race, and Atlanta fans will hope that things will be much better in the 2019 season.

As for Freeman, there's no doubt that he can be very effective in the Falcons' offensive attack, so getting him back in action will be crucial to adding another element to this offense.

The Falcons will now prepare for a Week 16 showdown against the Carolina Panthers, who are having their own issues while in the middle of a six-game losing streak.

After this week's NFC South clash, the Falcons will finish up the regular season on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
