Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints due to a foot/ankle injury.

Prior to having been ruled out, Freeman compiled 38 yards rushing on 10 carries. He also hauled in three passes for 10 yards through the air.

Without Freeman in the backfield, Atlanta has turned to Brian Hill as their lead back. Hill, who is appearing in his 22nd career game, has yet to make an NFL start.

Through play Sunday, Freeman has carried the ball 107 times this year for a total of 371 yards. He has seen an increased role in the offense thanks to his contributions in the passing game this season, having snagged 38 receptions for 282 yards, putting him on pace to challenge for new career bests through the air.

Once a two-time Pro Bowler, Freeman has struggled to both stay on the field and find the end zone over the past two seasons. Having played in just two games last year, he has yet to find pay dirt on the ground in nine games during 2019. In his first full year as Atlanta's starting running back in 2015, he tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns (11), before replicating that number in 2016 as well.

Freeman will have a week to recover before the Falcons travel to take on Carolina next Sunday. He has not compiled a rushing touchdown against the Panthers since Week 4 of the 2016 campaign. Hill would likely remain the team's primary rusher should Freeman be unable to suit up.
