The NFL and college football world received some sad news on Monday evening, Former Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines coach Gary Moeller passed away at the age of 81, as announced by the university and ESPN.

Gary Moeller, who succeeded Bo Schembechler as Michigan's football coach in 1990 and led the Wolverines to three Big Ten titles in five seasons, died Monday at the age of 81, the university announced.

The cause of Moeller's death was not specified by the school.

No cause of death is known at the time of print. Moeller, who spent five seasons with the Wolverines and one season as an interim head coach of the Lions, was a football coach through and through.

He compiled a 44-13-3 record for the Wolverines in five seasons, leading his teams to three Big Ten titles and a 4-1 record in bowl games.

The Lima, Ohio native was on the other side of the rivalry, as he played his college ball for Woody Hayes at Ohio State. After his playing career, he worked with former Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler, then taking a job as a head coach at Illinois.

He didn't stay away from the Wolverines for long. Moeller returned as an assistant, then succeeded Schembechler in 1990. Moeller jumped to the NFL following his Michigan tenure, working for the Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears and Lions.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, daughters Susan, Amy and Molly, as well as a son Andy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Gary Moeller.
