With the new no building meta in Fortnite, here's how you should cope with the game's new – or rather, lack of thereof – mechanic.

Fortnite has temporarily disabled building in battle royale which changed the dynamic of how to play the game. With that being said, there is a completely new meta in town that players might take a while to get used to.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 officially launched on March 20, 2022, bringing in more chaos and destruction in the game. The highlight of the new season is the fact that players can no longer build in battle royale mode. It caught everyone off guard especially knowing that build battling is Fortnite’s trademark. The way things are now, it’ll mostly be the sweaty players who’ll make major adjustments in playing the game. Here’s a full guide on how to survive the battle royale island with Fortnite’s new meta.

It felt weird initially not having building within the game, especially with muscle memory coming into play. The moment someone shoots at me, I’d immediately press on the build button so I could build some walls for cover. I’m pretty sure so does many Fortnite veterans. Now, we somehow feel nerfed as players given that we need to adjust to this new style of play. However, after playing several games of battle royale mode, I've slowly figured out how the new meta works. As of the moment, Fortnite is basically Apex Legends with fall damage. Here’s why:

Slide Jumping

I know what you’re thinking, slide jumping came out last season. However, players were still adjusting to the newly introduced feature at the time. Plus, building still existed in Fortnite which is why the slide jump feature was somehow underutilized.

Now that building no longer exists, players need to start relying more on movement and mobility to survive gunfights. Gone are the days when you can build walls to block the enemy’s bullets. It’s all about dodging and running these days. Slide jumping can slightly give players an edge in terms of dodging and escaping. It’ll be difficult to shoot at a moving target that is constantly sliding and jumping. Plus, slide jumping can also be useful when pushing an enemy squad. It gives players all the momentum they need to successfully initiate a clash.

Overshield

I’m not saying that Epic Games took a page out of Respawn’s book, but, this might be the case. At the start of each game in Apex Legends, players start the match automatically with an Evo Shield attached to them. This is to protect them from harm early game in case players don’t have weapons to fend for themselves. Fortnite literally has the same feature now, except, these shields actually recharge after a certain amount of time.

During your first battle royale match in Fortnite, the game will introduce the extra shield attached to your character. As mentioned in the game, because building no longer exists, the built-in shields will serve as extra protection. Keep in mind that players still need to fill up their shield meter with shield potions. The built-in shield only provides an extra 50 shields that self replenishes over time.

Climbing Walls and Ledges

Back when building still existed in Fortnite, players relied on building ramps to climb certain structures and areas. Now with building gone, you would think that you’d need to actually use stairs to climb your way up. Apparently, that isn’t the case as Epic Games added a parkour feature that players can utilize.

It’s another feature that’s perfect for escaping danger especially when you’re low on health. Enemy squads running after you might lose track of where you end up hiding because there are numerous ledges to climb onto. It’s also very useful when trying to access chests that are a few floors above you.

Super Sprint

Sprinting is a mandatory feature in any game. However, in a game like Fortnite without building to protect players, movement is the only workaround for the problem. Thankfully Epic decided to make it easier to blast your way out of a sticky situation with the new super sprint.

If you’ve played Apex Legends, then you must probably be familiar with the legend named Octane. Players in Fortnite can now sprint faster than before while having the ability to jump higher during the super sprint. After tapping on your sprint button, your character will have a short burst of superhuman capabilities to run faster and leap higher. This new feature is perfect for pushing, escaping, climbing, and traveling. Just make sure you have enough energy to utilize this ability in crucial moments.

The Fortnite community is evenly split at the moment. One half is complaining about having no build battles, while the other is rejoicing at the fact that they can keep with sweaty players. It’s not all that bad once you get used to it. In fact, it feels like playing an entirely new game which in my opinion is a good thing. This is Epic’s way of keeping the game fresh and innovative. Plus, chances are that Epic will retain this game mode even when building in Fortnite does come back. It’s a perfect game mode for players who just want to loot and shoot while still enjoying collecting Fortnite exclusive skins.
