The first wave of reviews for Furiosa didn't waste time mincing words, praising director George Miller for another visceral journey through the wastelands of Mad Max's world. However, the highest praise for the film yet has come from none other than gaming legend and the mastermind behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear, Hideo Kojima.
Kojima was quick to praise Furiosa coming out of a screening on Friday and his love for Miller's work going back to his teenage years. He wasn't shy about his love for it, calling it a “masterpiece” on X, referring to Miller as his “god,” and dubbing the Mad Max universe as his own “bible.”
Witnessed “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”!
This movie, which easily surpasses "MAD" and even past "FURY", is at its "MAX" (masterpiece)! Ever since I saw the first film when I was 16 years old, George Miller has saved me, encouraged me, and changed my way of life countless times. The longtime game developer's comments echo those made in 2015 after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, where Kojima shared similar praise for Miller's return to the wastelands. He cited the impact Miller's work on the original Mad Max films had on his games, from dialogue to vehicle designs and everything in between, and how he has never shied away from showing his love for cinema in his games.
“Honestly, I didn’t think anything could surpass ‘Mad Max 2,’ but I feel like you’ve topped yourself with ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,'” Kojima said at the time.
In a later post, Kojima admitted to rewatching Fury Road due to the “excitement” he felt coming out of his screening of Furiosa. He added that at the time of release, he saw Fury Road “17 times at the movie theater” and at least 30 times, total, between theaters, streaming, and blu-ray.
I watched “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” this morning, and I still can’t contain my excitement, so I rewatched “Mad Max: Fury Road.” At the time of release, I watched “Fury Road” 17 times at the movie theater. If I include Blu-ray, TV and in-flight showings, I’ve seen it at least 30… https://t.co/osY317iYkJ pic.twitter.com/G5jeaRaMVV

Kojima's love for Miller is such that the director will be featured in Kojima Productions next game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, as a member of the organization Drawbridge. Miller's character appears to be the captain of the ship ferrying Sam Porter from location to location, though he is only lending his likeness while longtime voice actor Marty Rhone will voice the new character.
This would make Miller the second director to be included in Death Stranding in this manner after Guillermo Del Toro, who lent his likeness to the first game as Deadman.
A Wonderous Wasteland
Kojima's love for Furiosa is one shared with many other critics who have gotten the chance to see Miller's latest entry in the world of Mad Max. A common theme is that Miller has hit another “home run” with Furiosa, though audiences should not go into the film expecting the same theatrical experience they got with Fury Road.
While Anya Taylor-Joy has received plenty of praise for her turn as the younger Furiosa, Chris Hemsworth has commonly been cited as a “scene-stealer” as the crazed and villainous Warlord Dementus.
It is not all perfect in the wasteland, though, as many critics cited Furiosa's CGI as one of the film's only glaring weaknesses. It is generally described as a mixed bag, with some CGI blending with no issues while being “ghastly” obvious at others.
Furiosa releases in theaters on May 24, 2024.
