In a recent Famitsu interview, Square Enix devs discussed the possibility of a Final Fantasy X-3. These devs were Tetsuya Nomura, Motomu Toriyama, and Kazushige Nojima. Apparently, a plot for the game has already been written by renowned scenario writer Nojima.
The supposed plot for FFX-3 will follow a similar storyline to Final Fantasy X -Will-. This was an audio drama also written by Nojima for the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remasters. -Will- is set one year after the events of FFX-2. It follows two new characters – Chuami and Kurgum. Their paths will eventually intertwine with FFX‘s main characters. They will all also have to deal with a new threat that looms over Spira. The concept art by Nomura that you see over this article depicts an older Tidus and Yuna.
Toriyama goes on to say that “the possibility of making FFX-3 is not zero,” and adds “however, we must first finish FF7R before we can consider other things.”

Hopes seem high, however, with Nojima commenting: “I had the opportunity to work with people who entered the game industry after playing FF7. But now that phase has moved and now I'm going with people who entered after playing FF10.” This might be hinting at a desire for the project from the dev team itself. So, while FFX-3 might still be several years away, at least we know now that there might be something to look forward to.
Perhaps for now we can look to the future of the Final Fantasy series instead of callbacks to the past – here are the latest developments on Final Fantasy XVI.
