The Challenges feature of League of Legends is now upon us! Over 300 Challenges are coming with the launch, and more will be added as it updates down the line. This new addition is “designed to provide meaningful progression to all League players,” including those who exclusively play ARAM, and skin collectors.

Once you’ve hit Master, many challenges also have their own Grandmaster and Challenger tiers. Just like Ranked, only a certain number of players per region can be in these tiers at any given time. If you’ve ever wanted to be known as the person with the most pentakills on the server this is your chance.

A new way to show off your progress aside from Ranked is finally here. Challenges were teased a while back, and it seems like it's finally ready for the upcoming League of Legends Patch 12.9. Long time fans of the scene will also be delighted to know that some players have been immortalized, referenced in some of these challenges. Unkillable Demon King, for example is a reference to League of Legends GOAT Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok. Flame Horizon is a reference to Korean top laner Lee “Flame” Ho-jong, for his lane dominance it is now a common term to refer to having a 100 CS lead in lane.

Challenges also adds a fun little facet to playing a lot, as progression is easily visible by the bars and a big crystal (see Challenges Tab). Playing ARAMs or Normal games will now be more satisfying due to the sense of achievement after every game, and it makes every game a little more different than the previous. To make room for showing off the challenges, the Loading Screen, Lobby, and End of Game all received overhauls. The Loading Screen will now show you your team's and the enemy team's Challenge progression, titles and more. Lobby banners have been rearranged to make room for Challenge Tokens and Titles, and the End of Game screen now shows a lot more information, including everyone's KDA ratio.

Challenges Tab

Challenges will be visible in an all-new tab under Profile. The big crystal on the left denotes your overall progression. Every challenge that ranks up will count toward your progression, evolving your crystal from Iron to Challenger.

The five bars underneath it represent the five categories of Challenges. Each of the five rank up as well, acting as a middle ground between your overall progress and individual challenges. Here are the categories and some Challenges under them.

  • Imagination: Modes and innovative plays make this category the home for those who dare to dream.
    • Bad Medicine: Kill enemies recently healed by a heal pack in ARAM
    • Wave Goodbye: Kill 20 minions within 3 seconds.
  • Expertise: Skillfully crushing your opponents is the way to earn big in this category.
    • Unkillable Demon King: Win games without dying
    • Flame Horizon: Win games with 100 or more CS than your opponent
  • Teamwork & Strategy: Working together with your team to dominate the Rift is the focus.
    • Soul Sweep: Claim Dragon Souls 4 – 0
    • Team Diff: Score aces between minion spawn and 15 minutes
  • Veterancy: Putting up big lifetime numbers in kills, gold earned, and other stats will help boost this bucket
    • PENTAKIIIIIIIIL!!: Get Pentakills
    • Multi-Weapon Master: Win with different Mythic Items
  • Collection: It's in the name. Collecting cosmetics and engaging in loot fills the bar here.
    • Icon of the Rift: Obtain Summoner Icons
    • Spice of Life: Obtain Champions

There is also a sixth category that are mostly time-limited and don't count towards progression of your crystal:

  • Legacy: Time-limited challenges live in this category to commemorate season-based accomplishments and past achievements others can no longer obtain. They don't contribute to your overall progress, nor can you level up Legacy as a category.

There's a search bar in the Challenges tab that'll let you find any challenge by its name or the criteria it tracks. You can also filter challenges within each category by group (ex. ARAM within Imagination), most recently ranked up, or current tier.

Challenge Cards

Each and every challenge gets a unique icon that represents it, called the Token. The Token also shows the challenge's current rank, and it is front and center in every challenge card. Below the Token is the name, and then under that is how to progress that particular challenge.

The number in the upper left corner of the card denotes how many points that challenge contributes toward your overall Challenges score. The symbol in the upper right shows you which game modes a challenge can progress in.

In the bottom of the card, the next major reward for leveling that challenge is visible. In this example, the title “Early Bird” is the reward once it hits Gold.

Tokens and Titles

What is progression without bragging to your friends about it? Lobbies have been updated to make space for you to show off your League of Legends Challenges and Titles.

In the updated lobby, the Summoner Icon is still the focus of your identity. Right below it is your Challenge Crystal. Hovering over a player's Summoner Icon, including yours, will show that player's current and past rank, Summoner Icon info, and detailed Challenges information including their rank for each of the five categories.

Titles earned from leveling challenges can be seen under the Summoner Names. Underneath the titles are three Challenge Tokens. You can equip which three you want to show off. Hovering over a Token will display more information about the challenge.

Hovering on another player's Token or Challenge Card will show you how your progress stacks up against theirs. You will also be able t see their server rank if it's applicable.

Loading Screen

The loading screen has also gotten a facelift! Player cards now have three sides. (Don't ask about the physics. They're Hextech.)

  1. Game Information: Champion, Skin, Ranked Border, First Strike Border, Summoner Name/Title/Icon, Summoner Spells, Runes, and Honor
  2. Champion Information: Champion Mastery and Eternals
  3. NEW: Player Information: Rank, Challenge Crystal, Challenge Tokens

A new button that cycles all ten players' cards to the same tab has also been added to the bottom of the loading screen.

End of Game

End of Game has also gotten a pretty hefty overhaul. We’ve split it into two screens: One for your personal progression and one for the game’s scoreboard.

The Progression Page will still display Ranked progress, Champion Mastery, Summoner Level, and Honor. The “big change” is the new carousel, which shows the Challenges and Eternals that progressed during that game, whether it leveled up, close to leveling up, or had a standout performance on.

The scoreboard has also been updated to show more information:

  • Added lane position (in modes that have it)
  • Added KDA
  • Added a column that toggles between damage dealt to champions, damage taken from champions, healing/shielding done, and CC score
  • The gold earned column toggles to minions killed
  • Honor also shows up here, since teammates may honor you after you've already moved over from the Progression tab

Banner Skins!

“Even though Challenges have launched, we're not done working on them! As one notable callout, we're working on a new lobby customization feature, tentatively named Banner Skins, that’ll come out after the initial Challenges launch. Among other things, Banner Skins will give you the option to more prominently feature your past rank.

We'll be on the lookout for usability and polish improvement opportunities as you all jump into the system, and we'll have more Challenges to come as League keeps evolving,” the dev post read.

League of Legends Challenges are expected to go live on Patch 12.9.
