Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has come out to apologize for the development delays of Final Fantasy XVI.

In a tweet posted on the Final Fantasy XVI account, Yoshi-P explained why developer updates on the game have been sparse since the game's reveal back in 2020. According to him, development of the game is six months behind. The delays, apparently, have been caused by COVID-19.

The last development update we've heard about Final Fantasy XVI came earlier this year, where Yoshida shared that the game's campaign script has been completed. However, we haven't heard much since. Because of these delays, Yoshida felt the need to address the silence to the fans. “I regret to inform you that I will be unable to keep (the promise to have more information on Final Fantasy XVI before the end of 2021) as complications stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have delayed the game's development by almost half a year,” Yoshi-P writes.

He then went into detail on how the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been severe in Japan, has affected their work environment. Top of the list is complications arising from the developers' transition from office work to work from home, which Yoshi-P explained, they spent most of 2021 addressing the issue.

Thankfully, Yoshi-P isn't leaving fans out to dry. The Final Fantasy XVI producer said that their team will be ready to share more information about the game in the next spring. “Well, I am happy to announce the current plan is to conduct our next big reveal in spring of 2022 as we seek to build excitement leading up to the game's eventual release.”

Fans and critics alike have praised Yoshida's approach to community communications, which has been warmly received even in his tenure with Final Fantasy XIV.
