After coming to terms with Ronald Araujo on a multiyear contract extension agreement last month, Barcelona club officials are now aiming to sign Gavi to such a deal as well.

In speaking ahead of Barca’s La Liga away fixture against Real Betis, club director of football Mateu Alemany confirmed that Gavi aspires to stay put and that the two sides are looking to reach an agreement on a new deal.

“Gavi wants to stay, and we are talking about making him a Barca player for many years,” Alemany said.

Gavi has a mere one more season remaining on his current contract at Barca. From Gavi’s standpoint, he is reportedly open to lowering his initial demands in order to remain at the Catalan side.

Barca club officials have remained stern in their ambition to sign the Spanish international to a new contract. Barca club president Joan Laporta noted in March that he wants the midfielder to stay, and he expects him to “adapt to the salary basis they are entitled to.”

Gavi has been linked with clubs such as Liverpool over the past months, although it is not known on whether the Premier League side plans to make an aggressive push to sign him in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Gavi has emerged as a reliable midfielder for the Catalan powerhouse this season, which includes 31 appearances in La Liga.

Barcelona has three matches remaining on its league schedule, including its upcoming home clash with Celta Vigo.
